What to expect when getting dental x-rays

X-rays are an important part of a thorough dental visit and examination, even in pediatric dentistry. Typically you can expect your child to need x-rays every 12 to 24 months. However, the frequency of x-rays depends on a variety of factors, such as risk of decay or signs of orthodontic problems.

When it’s time for your child to have dental x-rays, Dr. Caple or the dental assistant will have your child sit in a chair and will lay a lead “blanket” or “bib” over the trunk and pelvic regions to protect vital organs from any radiation exposure. Depending on the type of images needed, your child may need to bite down on a digital sensor inserted into your mouth in order to get a certain view of the teeth and gums, as well as how the upper and lower teeth meet each other.

Are pediatric dental x-rays painful?

No. X-rays are a painless, non-invasive procedure. Dental x-rays are simply the process of taking scans or pictures of your child’s mouth and take only a few seconds to complete.

Are dental x-rays dangerous?

No. The American Dental Association’s Division of Science says that, according to the American Nuclear Society, the amount of radiation exposure experienced in dental x-rays equates to about .15% of the average person’s exposure per year from background sources of radiation that exist in our environment.

Why are dental x-rays important?

X-rays are essential in pediatric dentistry because of their ability to reveal potential dental or soft tissue concerns, such as:

  • tooth decay

  • tooth impaction

  • bone disease

  • orthodontic misalignment

  • missing or extra permanent teeth

  • tumors, cysts, or other abnormalities

Dr. Brent Caple also uses x-rays to more accurately monitor the progress of any diagnosed dental problems or ongoing treatments. Young children should also have regular x-rays to monitor the growth of new teeth and to help recognize and prevent problems, such as permanent teeth growing in behind baby teeth.
