BRENT CAPLE PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY IN ROGERS, AR
Tooth Extractions for Kids
When are tooth extractions necessary?
Tooth extractions are sometimes necessary when a tooth is severely decayed, damaged, or cannot be restored through other treatments. While Dr. Brent Caple always prioritizes saving natural teeth whenever possible, there are cases when removing a tooth is the healthiest option for your child’s smile.
Common reasons a child may need a tooth extraction include:
Severe tooth decay or infection
Damage from injury or trauma
Baby teeth that fail to fall out naturally and block adult teeth
Preparation for orthodontic treatment
If your child experiences ongoing tooth pain, swelling, or signs of infection, it’s important to schedule an evaluation. Dr. Caple will gently assess your child’s teeth to determine whether an extraction or another restorative option is best for your child’s comfort and long-term oral health.
What to Expect During a Tooth Extraction?
Before the extraction, Dr. Caple gently numbs the area with a local anesthetic to ensure that the procedure is painless. Using a special dental instrument called an elevator, the tooth is carefully loosened and removed from its socket. Your child may feel some pressure during the process, but should not feel any pain.
To help young patients stay relaxed, our office also offers conscious sedation dentistry options. These techniques are safe and effective for children, helping them remain calm throughout the procedure. If you have any questions about sedation options, please discuss them with Dr. Caple during your visit.
After the tooth is removed, Dr. Caple will:
Clean the socket and surrounding tissue
Remove any infected material or debris
Smooth any sharp bone edges to promote healing

Aftercare for Pediatric Tooth Extractions
Healing typically takes just a few days. To prevent infection and promote proper recovery, follow these aftercare tips:
Control bleeding: Have your child bite gently on gauze until bleeding slows down. Slight oozing is normal. If bleeding continues after four hours, apply pressure with a moistened tea bag and contact our office.
Avoid rinsing for 24 hours: After the first day, rinse gently with warm salt water (½ teaspoon of salt in 8 oz of water) several times a day. Avoid commercial mouthwashes until healing is complete.
Manage discomfort: Mild pain or swelling is normal. Children’s Ibuprofen or Tylenol, used according to the directions, can help relieve discomfort.
Keep the mouth clean: After 24 hours, gently brush around the surgical area. A clean mouth heals faster.
Eat soft foods: Cold liquids like smoothies or milkshakes (without straws!) are ideal right after surgery. Gradually return to a normal diet with soft foods such as yogurt, soup, and mashed potatoes.
Rest and recover: Avoid strenuous activity and do not disturb the extraction site. Never use a straw, as suction can dislodge the clot and delay healing.
