What is pediatric preventative education?

Pediatric preventive education is the information, resources and coaching provided by pediatric dentist, Dr. Brent Caple, and his team of knowledgeable and experienced dental professionals.

At our pediatric dental clinic in Rogers, Arkansas, we take every opportunity to help children and parents understand the importance of oral and dental health. During routine dental cleanings and exams, in addition to answering any questions you or your child may have, we may discuss topics including:

Why is pediatric preventative education important?

Pediatric preventive education is important to help your child build healthy habits and a strong foundation for a lifetime of oral and dental health.

Although a healthy mouth is very important and affects the health of the entire body, children are sometimes particularly unmotivated to do the things required to prevent oral problems. In this case, preventive education can be helpful for children and parents as well.

For example, children may not like brushing their teeth or may find it uncomfortable, but learning how to brush properly as well as knowing the benefits it brings may help motivate them. If parents are concerned about thumb sucking or fingernail biting habits, Dr. Caple can answer questions about when these habits may start to cause long term effects or how to help a child eliminate these habits. Dr. Caple can evaluate your child’s need for fluoride treatments or pills, discuss what to do in case of dental trauma, or share information about preventive treatments like dental sealants

Dr. Caple may also take the opportunity to talk with parents about possible future orthodontic treatment because of crowding or bite issues, even if the need is not urgent. This gives the child and the parent the chance to learn about any habits they may be able to address or change in order to prevent this need in the future.

All in all, preventive education at your child’s dentist’s office may take a little extra time at their appointments, but having critical information and the chance to hear expert advice from a professional can help prevent pain both for your child and your wallet in the end.
