Composite Fillings

Cartoon tooth with a cavity needing filled by Dr. Brent Caple, DDS in Rogers, AR.

What is a composite filling?

A composite filling is a tooth-colored composite resin used to fill in and repair the portion of a tooth that has decayed or suffered minor damage.

Composite fillings are used for small to medium tooth caries, or dental cavities, and have a natural appearance, as opposed to the amalgam fillings used in years past.

How do I know if my child needs a filling?

During a pediatric dental visit and examination, Dr. Caple will examine your child’s teeth to diagnose any cavities or damage that may require a dental filling. If a filling is needed, he will discuss the recommended treatment plan with you and your child to answer any questions and determine the next best step to keep your child’s smile healthy and happy.

What is it like to get a composite filling?

The first step is to prepare the patient, by numbing the area with an anesthetic injection. Next, Dr. Brent Caple will prepare the tooth by cleaning out the decayed area using a dental hand-piece. Since the area must be kept very dry, a suction tool will frequently be used to prevent saliva from entering the space.

Using an acidic gel, Dr. Caple will make the surfaces that will receive the filling rough, so that they will bond well with the filling. A layer of bonding material will be added next and then the first layer of composite will be applied. If the hole requires multiple layers, each layer must be dried with a special light before the next is applied.

What aftercare is needed for a composite filling?

After receiving a composite filling, your tooth should function normally. However, you should wait until all effects of any anesthesia are gone before eating anything hard to chew or too hot. Some people may need to eat soft foods temporarily so as not to irritate any mild initial discomfort or sensitivity with eating.

Brush and floss with care for the first day after the procedure. Any soreness from the numbing injection should be manageable with over-the-counter pain medication.
