What is an oral cancer screening like?

Oral cancer screenings for children are a simple process and most often a visual examination for any growths or lesions. During an in-office dental examination, Dr. Brent Caple may perform an oral cancer screening by checking your child’s face, neck, and mouth for any abnormalities that may indicate signs of oral cancer.

Who needs an oral cancer screening? Why is it important?

Everyone should receive an oral cancer screening at least once a year. While children are at a much lower risk for oral cancer than adults, Dr. Caple recommends every patient undergo an oral cancer screening to monitor any changes to the soft tissues in the mouth.

Although there are known risk factors associated with oral cancer such as sun exposure or tobacco use, the Mayo Clinic has stated that oral cancer cases have been increasing in recent years while the reasons for that are not yet clear. Therefore, oral cancer screenings may become increasingly important for more patients as early detection for any cancer can significantly increase treatability.
